A little bit more about me

I have had a lifelong passion for all things to do with astronomy, space flight, and aviation stemming from trips when my father took me along to my first BAA inner planets exhibition at the University of Sheffield when I was 7. A trip a year later took me to RAF Finningly organised by Stuart Lonsdale the honorary president of Sheffield Astronomical Society. I was hooked from then on. My father took me along to the Sheffield Astronomical Society meetings at the city museum (those were the days) & their observatory as it was then, at Norton, that’s when I first got really involved in astronomy at the tender age of 7! seems such a long time ago now!

It was also about this time I wrote to Patrick Moore too (He hadn't been knighted then) and I still have the letter he sent me framed on the wall in my study. Since then I have been lucky enough to meet Patrick many times. I was very keen on astronomy at school and I studied astronomy O’ level aged 14 at a different school in the evenings and passed with top marks.

After I joined Sheffield Astronomical Society (see above) and found another great friend there in Darren Swindells, Darren is one of the longest standing members of Sheffield Astronomical Society. I was a member of the society for many years; I was involved in their junior section and then later senior committee as publicity officer and secretary. It was good to have a wonderful grounding in "grass roots" astronomy.

Whilst still at school a teacher, who had lived in Houston in the 60’s generously, gave me a pack of memorabilia he had got the astronauts to sign, they are still in my collection today. As a result of that I am an avid space flight and astronomy memorabilia collector, for example I have every NASA issued crew photograph from 1961 right through to the latest Shuttle crews. I have even managed to meet a few astronauts over the years see the SPACEFLIGHT page on this site.

I still maintain links with space agencies around the world, I was on the NASA News Information List for over 17 years.

Just before I had finished my degree at the University of Sheffield (I got a B.Sc (Hons) I was invited by the director of Sheffield Hallam University Star Centre to join their team of astronomers. I jumped at the chance without hesitation. Our main projects are introducing astronomy to the public through our very popular “StarNight” events where we give lectures and weather permitting observing. One of the highlights was when we organised a daytime event called “STARDAY” and we had a live link to the Mt Wilson Observatory in California where we observed various objects in real time. This is a post I continue to enjoy as it allows me to pass on my enthusiasm for astronomy to others.

I also have a good friend who is one of the professional astronomers at the University of Cambridge - Institute of Astronomy. I have access to the Institutes extensive Astronomy & Space Science library so you can be sure the information you get in StarDome's presentations is up to date and accurate. I was, and still am involved in the world of Astronomy retail so I am able to advise & recommend what equipment you can use for enjoying the night sky.

As well as being very busy with StarDome - Clients are booking up to 2 years in advance! I am currently working on some new and exiting astronomy projects and ideas

My interest and enthusiasm for the subjects are as strong now as they were all those years ago

I still love to go outside and observe the night sky when time and weather allow

Here I am at Kelling Heath Equinox Star Party
